Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were anticipated to have a field day during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 auction which occurred in Jaipur on Tuesday. The franchise which had quite a lot of places to fill was among the busier teams of the day as they fought with different sides to snap some deal buys during the auction. KKR was qualified to buy a maximum of 12 players — five of which may be foreign players. They stopped picking up eight players at the IPL 2019 auctions with West Indies’ T20 captain, with Carlos Brathwaite getting their largest buy of this year.
KKR, who were occupied right from the beginning, made Brathwaite their first buy of the day and followed it up with the likes of New Zealand all-rounder Lockie Ferguson along with English pacer Harry Gurney. Brathwaite was a part of this Sunrisers Hyderabad side last season and has been barely used, managing to play only four matches for the IPL 2018 runners-up. The Caribbean, that started the auctions with a base price of $75 lakh, was purchased for a whopping $5 crore — which makes him their most expensive buy of this year.

Heading to the auctions, KKR had released six players with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson, R Vinay Kumar, Ishank Jaggi, Apoorv Wankhade and Tom Curran finding their way out of their franchise. KKR’s latest purchases are tipped to provide more balance to the middle-order, a place that had been their undoing last season. English Pacer, Gurney who picked up over 130 wickets in 114 T20 games will surely strengthen the bowling line-up.
KKR produced a formidable batting attack with the likes of skipper Dinesh Karthik, Nitish Rana, Chris Lynn and Andre Russell forming the heart and will once more rely on them to provide in 2019. Joining this assault would be former bowler Sunil Narine, who has discovered a second life with the bat in the past year’s IPL. Narine moved up the sequence to open the batting and was simply destructive. So it’s not likely to give up that place anytime soon. U-19 World Cup winner Shubman Gill, who impressed with his performance last year and is now using a great Ranji run, is guaranteed to play a much larger part in KKR’s initial team.
In what has been a significant setback for the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2019, two of the frontline pacers, Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti have been ruled from the entire year because of injury. This is the second year in a row that Nagarkoti was ruled out of the year. India’s twist lead Kuldeep Yadav has had an excellent year with the ball this year and will lead KKR’s spin attack in 2019. He’ll be joined by the likes of Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine who create an extremely remarkable spin trio.
